Exploring Yantai’s Port-Opening Heritage and Unlocking the City’s Energy Secrets: Yantai’s Parent-Child Nuclear-Themed Fun City Walk Successfully Kicked Off

Jiaodong.Net, July 5, 2025 (Reporter: Wu Yong; Photographer: Li Gang) – Exploring Yantai’s port-opening heritage and unlocking the city’s energy secrets. “Exploring Yantai’s Port-Opening Heritage · Unlocking the City’s Energy Secrets” Yantai’s Parent-Child Nuclear-Themed Fun City Walk was successfully held on July 5, 2025, at the century-old Chaoyang Street. Centered on “immersive City Walk experience + fun science popularization of nuclear energy + parent-child interactive learning”, the event unfolded against the backdrop of Yantai’s port-opening history. Over a hundred parent-child families participated in a series of “level-based” games. This event fostered a strong atmosphere of “learning science, loving science, and applying science” to a certain extent, contributing robustly to enhancing public scientific literacy and building a scientific and technological powerhouse.
Yin Ming, Director of Yantai Emerging Industry Development Promotion Center, noted in his speech that the public perceives nuclear energy with a certain sense of “distance” and “mystery”. How to bring nuclear energy knowledge out of laboratories and lecture halls truly into the daily lives of ordinary people, especially helping the next generation develop a scientific and rational understanding, is a critical challenge and noble mission for the science popularization of nuclear energy. Therefore, the pioneering event combined the popular urban exploration activity of “City Walk”, a city exploration method beloved by young people, with the science popularization of nuclear energy and parent-child interaction. Yantai’s charming characteristic blocks, historical buildings, and coastal scenery are no longer just cultural landscapes, but have transformed into vivid “mobile popular science classrooms.”
Liu Zhen, Deputy Director of Yantai Convergence Media Center, stated that the center bears an irreplaceable mission to tell good stories about nuclear energy, bridge the “knowledge gap,” and build public trust. This event marks a vital practice in transforming science popularization of nuclear energy from “one-way delivery” to “two-way interaction,” from “ivory towers” to “everyday life,” and from “knowledge transmission” to “emotional resonance.” It is a science popularization gathering integrating innovation, fun, education, and social significance, painting a vivid picture of science popularization of nuclear energy that warms hearts and inspires wisdom with the city as the canvas, footsteps as the brush, and parent-child interaction as the bond.
Li Zheng, Senior Director of Yantai Blue Sky Group, described this dialogue across time and space as a vivid practice of Yantai Cultural Tourism Group’s commitment to the innovative vision of “culture + technology + experience” and the creation of a comprehensive cultural tourism industry chain. Chaoyang Street, one of China’s well-preserved port-opening architectural complexes with a history of nearly 160 years, is not only a city tourism landmark but also a spiritual symbol of Yantai’s people. In the past, the Street embraced the world, witnessing the integration of Chinese and Western civilizations. Today, it opens its doors to popularize nuclear energy knowledge, bringing the concept of clean energy into thousands of households. In “carrying forward this legacy,” it safeguards the city’s cultural roots and leads the way toward green development.

Currently, vigorously developing clean energy and promoting green and low-carbon transformation of the economy and society has become a common consensus of the international community in addressing global climate change. Yantai has fully leveraged its abundant resource advantages to build a new energy system integrating “nuclear, wind, solar, hydrogen, storage, and LNG.” Among them, nuclear energy is not only crucial to the future of national energy but also carries the mission of lighting up thousands of households. In Yantai, Haiyang Nuclear Power Units No.1 and No.2 have generated over 1300 billion kWh of electricity in total; “Nuanhe No.1,” China’s first commercial nuclear heating demonstration project, has created a miracle of zero-carbon heating; dozens of nuclear power central enterprises and institutions, including the CPIS Nuclear Energy Headquarters, have settled in Yantai. Focusing on the application of third- and fourth-generation nuclear power technologies, such as AP1000, CAP1400, HPR1000, and HTGRs, Yantai is actively cultivating a multi-faceted nuclear power industry cluster covering nuclear power material R&D, nuclear power equipment manufacturing, nuclear power plant construction, operation, and maintenance. This initiative aims to establish Yantai as a leading hub for third-generation nuclear power technology, a center for talent aggregation in nuclear power innovation and R&D, and a demonstration leader in nuclear power equipment and comprehensive nuclear energy utilization.
Science popularization paves the way for nuclear energy development. This event was guided by Yantai Emerging Industry Development Promotion Center (Nuclear Power Office), Yantai Clean Energy Industry Chain Office, Yantai Nuclear Emergency Command Service Support Center, and Yantai Convergence Media Center. It was hosted by the Nuclear Energy Comprehensive Utilization Association of the Chinese Nuclear Society and Yantai Zhongchuang Nuclear Power R&D Center, organized by Jiaodong Online, Yantai Nuclear Energy Science and Technology Innovation Media Co., Ltd., and Yantai Clean Energy Industry Association, with ??support?? from Yantai Cultural Tourism Industry Development Group Co., Ltd. These collaborative efforts are accelerating Yantai’s development in building a demonstration city for green, low-carbon, and high-quality growth.
