On the afternoon of September 14th, it was announced at a press conference held by the Information Office of the Shandong Provincial Government that the 2024 World Industrial Design Congress will be held at the Yantai Bajiaowan International Convention and Exhibition Center from September 20th to 22nd. Since 2019, the World Industrial Design Congress has been successfully hosted in Yantai for four consecutive years. Alongside these main events, over 70 professional forums, both online and offline, have been organized. A total of 130 domestic and international keynote speakers have been invited, with a peak of 7.7 million simultaneous online viewers and a cumulative display of the cutting-edge achievements of 3,089 innovative enterprises at home and abroad, attracting more than 500,000 on-site spectators.
Shen Jian, a Member of the Standing Committee of the Yantai Municipal Party Committee and the Deputy Mayor of Yantai City, stated that industrial design is the driving force for promoting the innovative development of the manufacturing industry and also a key factor in enhancing industrial competitiveness and fostering novel and high-quality productive forces. In recent years, Yantai has intensified its top-level design and accelerated the gathering of design resources and innovative elements. Industrial design has demonstrated significant impact in strengthening industrial chains, empowering industries, and facilitating high-quality development.
Adhering to Chain Thinking and Strengthening Policy Guidance
The Atmosphere of Industrial Design Is Becoming Stronger
Industrial design has been integrated into the 16 key industrial chains of the city for meticulous cultivation. With the chain leader in charge, the chain office overseeing construction, and the chain master leading the way, a series of lists have been formulated, covering key enterprises in Yantai, outstanding design products, as well as leading domestic enterprises and research institutions. These measures have been vigorously promoting key tasks such as technological innovation, project construction, and the attraction of investments and talents. Since 2019, a series of policy initiatives such as the Opinions on Accelerating the Development of Industrial Design and the Implementation Opinions on Accelerating the Construction of a Strong City in Advanced Manufacturing, have been formulated and promulgated successively. A special fund for industrial design awards and subsidies, with a maximum of 10 million yuan, has been set up to reward and subsidize industrial design innovation carriers, market entities, and outstanding works with financial support, thereby fostering a favorable social environment where industrial design is valued, respected, and promoted.

The Empowerment of Industrial Design Is Becoming Increasingly Evident
Focus on the Introduction and Development of Innovative Entities. The hierarchical cultivation system for national, provincial, and municipal industrial design centers has been continuously refined. Currently, there are 6 national-level industrial design centers, 44 provincial-level ones, and 304 at the municipal level. The only national-level industrial design research institute in the domestic intelligent manufacturing field has been established. It has participated in more than 10 major projects, including the overall design of the snow wax vehicle for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and the research and development of its key components. Moreover, a nationally leading public service platform for prototype innovation has also been established.
Promote the Integrated Development of Industries. Regularly organize activities to introduce industrial design into industrial parks and enterprises to enhance the collaborative design capabilities across the entire industrial chain. A number of industrial design products incorporating new technologies and processes have emerged, such as the flexible intelligent assembly production line by Moon Environment Technology Co., Ltd. and the mining fire-fighting robot by Guoxing Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd. The city now has 8 national-level and 22 provincial-level service-oriented manufacturing demonstration enterprises. Yantai has been named one of the first batch of national service-oriented manufacturing (industrial design characteristic category) demonstration cities.

Yantai’s Industrial Design Reputation Is Shining Brighter
The World Industrial Design Congress has been hosted in Yantai four times. We have seized the opportunity to organize the congress and plan brand activities, promoting a seamless integration between the congress and industrial design. Subsequently, we have also held several high-profile events, including two award and exhibition ceremonies for the "China Excellent Industrial Design Award", two for the "Governor Cup Industrial Design Competition of Shandong", and five for "Major Cup Industrial Design Competition". Three works, including the marine launch system for carrier rockets, have won gold and bronze awards at the "China Excellent Industrial Design （CEID）", while 49 works have won gold, silver, and bronze awards at the "Governor Cup Industrial Design Competition of Shandong", ranking among the top in the province by quantity. Local design competitions in Yantai, such as the "PHF Cup International Home Textile Creative Design Contest", "Nanshan Fashion Cup", and "Bright Stone Cup Micro-Nano Sensing Technology and Intelligent Application Competition", have developed their own brands and produced numerous highlights, contributing to the continuous elevation of industrial design's influence in Yantai.
